About: Billy...

Biography:

Billy was born in Cheshire but grew up in a small village in rural Dorset. He began playing drums at the age of 9 and was soon learning how to read and play with other musicans in and out of school. In 1999 Billy won Dorset’s Young Drummer of the Year competition in Wimborne playing a Grade 4 piece called Corners.

In 2000, aged 14, he performed in front of 5000 people with the Dorset Youth Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall which included playing timpani on Elgar’s classic ‘Pomp and Circumstance March No 1’.

He was Head Drummer of the award winning Purbeck School’s jazz and concert bands and performed at the finals of the National school bands competition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Later on in his school years he spent some time on work experience with the Royal Corps of Signals jazz and concert bands, performing for Prince Phillip.

Billy moved to from Bournemouth to Guildford in 2004 to begin studying for a degree in Contemporary Music at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM). While at the ACM he formed indie band ‘the Coronation’ who were promptly signed to WCS Records and their release ‘Heartbleeder’ received Radio One airplay.

In 2006 Billy joined rock band 51/50s and signed a one album deal with Slice the Pie. The album ‘Dangerous State of Mind’ was released on 29th June 2009 after working with Matt Hyde (Fightstar, Slipknot) at Miloco’s Garden Studio in Shoreditch, and is available for download on iTunes.

Over the years Billy has worked on various stage shows playing drums for Chicago, Calamity Jane, Grease and Guildford School of Acting’s Hot Mikado. He has played radio sessions for XFM, Kerrang! and the BBC. He also played and featured in Sony Walkman’s worldwide TV commercial filmed at Alexandra Palace in 2007.

Billy has taught drums since he was 16 and after completing his degree in 2008 he received a Princes Trust loan enabling him to start a teaching business. This business saw him develop a large base of students across the Surrey and Reading areas both privately and in schools.

In 2010 Billy moved back to Bournemouth to develop new musical projects whilst keeping a teaching base in Surrey and Reading. He now plays for acoustic Radio One style band ‘The Live Lounge Project’, pop function band ‘Nu Generation’ and ska band ‘The Raptures’.
